We are raising funds for Montclair State’s Live Literature reading series! The series serves over 3,000 students, and it is required that all First-Year Writing students in College Writing II attend a Live Lit. For many students, this is the first time they’ve attended a literary reading, and we hear time and time again how surprised they are that they actually liked the event! Many students are taught to see literature as an art form that only exists in the dusty pages of a textbook and belongs to some far-away time. When they attend Live Lit, they see that many living writers are not that different from themselves.
When booking artists and performers, we prioritize featuring people of color, LGBTQ+ folks, women and femmes, people with disabilities, and those from working class backgrounds. We want students to hear stories and see art that reflects their lives and experiences, as well as to engage with lives and stories that are markedly different from their own.
Funds raised will help us to host writing workshops for our students, pay writer honorariums, expand the program, and invite students to VIP receptions with featured artists and writers. Your support will also allow us to invite more filmmakers and multimedia artists.
Live Lit began in 2009. With this contribution, you're helping us birth a new era of Live Lit--an era with funding!
