We take part in several tournaments throughout the season. Our team needs your help to continue to play in our tournaments! We appreciate your support! Campus Recreation We are a small club that has only been around for about six years within the Campus Recreation Department at Montclair State University. Although it has not been a lot of time, we take part in many activities and we have significantly grown as a team. As a part of the NCSA, we take part in several tournaments throughout the season. Our schedule requires us to play most of our games on the road with the next big tournament being in Virginia. We compete against Rutgers University, Monmouth University, Lafayette College, Rider University, TCNJ, and Hofstra University. We also raise funds throughout the entirety of the school year. Funding will be utilized for lodging and to provide per diem for players while traveling. Our team could use your help to allow us to continue to play in our tournaments without financial stress on our players. We appreciate your support!

Support Rocky's Closet in Honor of Dr. Pennington's Retirement
By Office of Annual Giving
Raise funds for Rocky's Closet in honor of Dr. Pennington's retirement from Montclair State University.
Raise funds for Rocky's Closet in honor of Dr. Pennington's retirement from Montclair State University. Office of Annual Giving Dr. Karen L. Pennington will be retiring on April 1 after a successful 22-year career as Vice President of Student Development and Campus Life at Montclair State University. During her tenure, Dr. Pennington has led by example. Her skills, knowledge and long history of impressive achievements, ignited her deep passion for the development of students. Join us as we come together to support Rocky's Closet in honor of Dr. Pennington's retirement. Dr. Pennington has made it her mission to put students first. Help us leave a lasting legacy in her name by supporting this important initiative. "Dr. Pennington understood that being able to meet the basic needs of students was an integral step in creating an environment for students to succeed at the University. Her genuine concern for their health, safety and well-being and her forward vision, resulted in the creation of exceptional and innovative programs and services for students. These initiatives have helped to empower and support students in and outside the classroom," said Dean Margaree Coleman-Carter, Dean of Students. "Personally, she is generous with her gifts and time and is often the first to contribute to initiatives for students sponsored by the University and the Division. She continues to serve as a mentor and role model to numerous students and professional staff. Dr. Pennington leaves a legacy of a deep and lasting commitment to the field of Student Affairs and Higher Education." Rocky's Closet Dr. Pennington noticed that many students attending the career fair in recent years did not have appropriate professional attire. For some students the cost of a suit or other professional clothing can be cost prohibitive. Dr. Pennington once again rallied behind another initiative in support of our students - Rocky’s Closet. Rocky’s Closet provides professional clothing to any student who needs it so they are best prepared for their interviews and careers. "I've had the opportunity to watch students enter Rocky’s Closet, and leave with a huge smile on their faces because they found the outfit they needed. They were ready and felt a little more confident than when they first entered Rocky’s Closet. That is exactly what Dr. Pennington envisioned. It is not about the clothing, but how the clothing makes the student feel – determined, confident, empowered. Providing a student with a professional outfit may give them the confidence to land their dream job which helps them obtain economic independence. That is Dr. Pennington’s ultimate goal for Rocky’s Closet - one suit, one tie, one dress at a time." said associate Dean of Students, Fatima deCarvalho. Learn more about Rocky's closet and how you can also donate new or gently used items.

Emergency Book Fund 2019
By Office of Annual Giving

This summer, let's make sure that our students are well prepared for next academic year. Office of Annual Giving This summer, let's make sure that our students are well prepared for next academic year. Open to all students, the book fund provides assistance for those who would otherwise be unable to purchase needed textbooks due to financial hardship. Established by Student Development and Campus Life, The Office of Financial Aid and The Office of Annual Giving, the Emergency Book Fund was created to supplement existing book scholarships and grants. Karen L. Pennington, Vice President for Student Development and Campus Life, shares the importance of this campaign. “We receive requests that are more than double the amount of the available grants and funds for this type of need. Obviously, there is a tremendous need for book support and many students would not get the help they need without this Emergency Book Fund.” Margaree Coleman-Carter, Dean of Students, has seen the immediate impact that donations make to this fund. “Students have been pouring into our office to apply for the funds, says Dean Carter. “There is obviously a great need for this type of support for our students, and students have expressed their appreciation for this resource. The Emergency Book Fund will allow more deserving students an opportunity to purchase books and supplies critical to their academic success this semester.”

Support the President Susan A. Cole Scholarship
By Office of Annnual Giving
Celebrating Dr. Cole’s Accomplishments & Creating a Legacy for Students
Celebrating Dr. Cole’s Accomplishments & Creating a Legacy for Students Office of Annnual Giving After 23 years of service to the University, Dr. Cole has announced her retirement at the end of this academic year. Join us in honoring Dr. Cole and creating an enduring impact for students by supporting the President Susan A. Cole Scholarship. The purposes of the scholarship are twofold. First, to assure that students who have strived to achieve educational success shall have the opportunity for an education at Montclair State University without respect to the economic and social challenges they may face and without respect to the life circumstances into which they were born. Second, to assure that the University does its part to identify, nurture and retain in-state New Jersey students who have demonstrated the potential to turn a higher educational opportunity into a life and career capable of making important contributions to the state and the nation. This scholarship will make possible the opportunity for a rigorous higher education to talented and ambitious students without respect to the circumstances of the family into which they were born. Dr. Cole initiated the University’s Presidential Scholars, with the first cohort of students awarded in fall 2018. As Presidential Scholars, students receive challenging academic and career preparation opportunities along with the support of a $5,000 scholarship for each of their four years of study, for a potential total award of $20,000. For students like sophomore Ana Mendonca, a Biology major, receiving the scholarship was life changing. “I worked very hard in high school…I knew I needed to get a scholarship. I am very grateful to be awarded as a Presidential Scholar; without this scholarship, I would not be in college right now.” By supporting the President Susan A. Cole Scholarship, you increase the University’s ability to award these scholarships to New Jersey’s promising students. Recognizing Dr. Cole’s Leadership Known as an energetic and engaged leader with an unflagging work ethic, Cole said she is leaving not because she accomplished everything she set out to do, but because “at some point, I just have to stop.” The work of developing the University, she said, is never done. “The University is organic and ever changing and meant for the ages, not just the decades. And, as for me, if I stayed here for another 20 or so years, I would still never accomplish what I came to do, because my dreams and goals for the University keep growing with the University.” Cole became Montclair State’s eighth and first woman, president in 1998. During her tenure, the University’s enrollment grew from 12,000 to 21,000 students, and Montclair State took its place as one of New Jersey’s most successfully diverse institutions, while expanding its degree offerings and earning national and state recognition as a research university. Throughout it all, the University has kept its focus on its students, providing them with an excellent yet affordable education to equip them to lead lives of purpose and meaning. Under Cole’s leadership the University created four new schools and colleges: the School of Communication and Media, home to one of the nation’s best media production facilities and over 1,000 students; the John J. Cali School of Music, which together with the Department of Theatre and Dance has gained a national and international reputation for educating performing artists; University College, which serves close to 2,000 pre-major students; and a new, highly innovative School of Nursing. Read the full announcement regarding Dr. Cole’s retirement and view her address to faculty and staff, which was live streamed on the University’s YouTube channel.

This fund seeks to acknowledge and reward the hard work of undergraduate students who volunteer their time and efforts to the radio station. WMSC 90.3 WMSC FM is an alternative rock and talk college radio station owned by Montclair State University, largely operated by university students and supported by the School of Communication and Media. The station broadcasts locally at 90.3 MHz, worldwide via their website, and is also available via the iHeartRadio app. In the past four years, WMSC has earned national recognition receiving two nominations for the prestigious Marconi Radio Award, winning the Spirit of College Radio Award twice, and several college broadcasters wins and nominations including being nominated for Best College Station in The Nation (in colleges of +10,000 students). There are currently 20 student directors who oversee the station’s operation in the areas of news, sports, music, production, promotions, ticket giveaways, website, social media, engineering, morning show production and office manager. There are over 45+ disc jockeys and contributors and each semester WMSC trains up to 30 new DJs. Students who participate at WMSC have, as a result, obtained internships at commercial stations such as WDHA, 101.5FM, WCBS, iHeartRadio and SiriusXM among others. During the stay-at-home orders, the station remained on air, with students staying committed to their roles and ensuring the station was giving everyone a sense of purpose during historically challenging times for all. The WMSC Excellence in Radio Scholarship and Training Fund seeks to acknowledge and reward the hard work of undergraduate students who volunteer their time and efforts to the radio station and embody the hard work and spirit of Excellence in College Radio. Your donations will assist outstanding Montclair State University sophomore, junior, and senior students - who demonstrate considerable achievement and leadership at the radio station and have significant potential for future creative development in the broadcast arts - in defraying tuition costs and attend vital industry training (NAB, BEA, CBI, etc.). Being able to assist them to defray tuition cost and send them to radio industry trainings held by the National Association of Broadcasters, The Broadcast Education Association, College Broadcasters Inc. that take place annually also provides them with the networking and training opportunities that can help define their careers.

8th Annual Red Hawk Open - Virtual Edition
By Montclair State Athletics
Now more than ever, our student-athletes need your support. Sponsorship opportunities are now available.
Now more than ever, our student-athletes need your support. Sponsorship opportunities are now available. Montclair State Athletics Montclair State University’s 8th Annual Red Hawk Open will be held on Monday, September 14. In this rapidly shifting landscape, and with the health and safety of our community and staff in mind, the program for 2020 will be held virtually. Join us online at 6:30 p.m. on September 14 as we hear from our Athletics program, highlight our generous sponsors and hold the live raffle drawing. Now more than ever, our student-athletes need your support. Sponsorship opportunities are now available. Proceeds from the Red Hawk Open support the more than 500 student athletes and 18 varsity athletic programs of the Montclair State University Athletic Department. Your support of the Red Hawk Open helps our students excel athletically and it demonstrates to our athletes that their effort and commitment are valued by Montclair State alumni, community members and colleagues. Last year's outing raised funds to create the Red Hawk Sports Network (RHSN). The network covers all of the Red Hawks' 18 varsity athletic teams. At a time when virtual opportunities are so important, your support keeps us online. The Red Hawk Sports Network (RHSN) launched in the fall of 2019 and is a joint venture between the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Montclair State University’s School of Communication and Media. The network covers all of the Red Hawks’ 18 varsity athletic teams, including live events through YouTube. The inaugural Red Hawk Sports Network team consists of two sports commentators: a play-by-play and color commentator and a production team that assists in producing the live stream for the games. Social media interns also help provide video and other content for the network. There are currently plans to bring in sideline reporters, sports analysts and other positions in later months. The network will use state of the art equipment for their games. The school recently reached a deal with Pixellot, a sports-production company, to use its automated camera system to air the games. Pixellot’s innovative cameras have the unique ability to follow the action of the game using advanced auto production algorithms without the need for a camera operator. This allows for the cameras to automatically identify highlights, create replays and much more. It also automatically saves games to the cloud and can stream it live or on-demand. This system of sports production is typically only seen in Division I schools and professional sports. Along with cutting edge technology, the school plans on expanding the network immensely in the future. Interviews, highlight packages, halftime shows, and much more are expected to be apart featured on the network as well. The RHSN is fully run by students, giving them experience in all aspects of sports journalism. Help us reach that next level by supporting the 8th Annual Red Hawk Open through one of the many sponsorship opportunities available. You can also support the 8th Annual Red Hawk Open – Virtual Edition by purchasing raffle tickets online. This is a great way to support Montclair State Athletics and get in on the fun. The EOF book fund provides scholarships for highly motivated low income scholars to purchase/rent books for their courses. Daniel Jean, Director The EOF book fund provides scholarships for highly motivated low income scholars to purchase/rent books for their courses. The average cost of books per semester can range from $200-$600 and continues to rise. In November 1967, in the aftermath of the previous summer's riots in Newark, New Jersey's newly-appointed Chancellor of Higher Education, Ralph A. Dungan, directed a memorandum to the presidents of all of the state's institutions of higher education. In it he outlined a proposed program of special assistance to young men and women from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. The message called for the establishment of a broad range of programs to address the basic conditions the Commission had cited as contributing to the summer's unrest. Among those programs was the Educational Opportunity Fund, established by legislation sponsored by then - freshman legislator Thomas Kean. In the past 50, years, EOF has been established on over 55 campuses in the state of New Jersey and sets the pace for many initiatives which today are widely incorporated into college life. Among the many powerful strategies implemented by EOF are precollege articulation, basic skills testing and remediation, systematic retention efforts, peer counseling and peer tutoring, academic support courses, multicultural curricula and human relations programming, student leadership development, and outcomes-based program evaluation. Today, the EOF program at Montclair State serves low-income, highly motivated first-generation students who have demonstrated commitment, motivation, and potential for success in every county of the state. Please consider supporting education for our future generations by donating to our crowdfunding campaign to establish the MBA Scholarship Fund. Natalie Jones, Coordinator A graduate education is one of the most important investments for an individual. There is no doubt in the long term return on investment and improved quality of life obtained from having a graduate degree. With the demand for advancement requiring higher degree credentials, the rising cost of higher education, and reduced employee reimbursement options, for many, graduate education is a dream that cannot be achieved without assistance. This year Montclair State Celebrates its 110th year of providing education to students from across the country and the globe, and the MBA Program celebrates its 38th year of educating future business leaders. Please consider supporting education for our future generations by donating to our crowdfunding campaign to establish the MBA Scholarship Fund - $38 for Montclair State / $110 in celebration of the university's 110th year. Our goal is to raise $2,500. Every gift counts. Thank you for paying it forward and making graduate education possible for our students. We invite you to learn more about the amazing experiences provided to our students in the program.

The excitement is palpable and the motto "This Goes to 11" (a wink to "These Go to 11" on the classic mockumentary "This is Spinal Tap") has sent them into overdrive! There are currently 20 student directors who oversee the station’s operation in the areas of news, sports, music, production, promotions, ticket giveaways, website, social media, engineering, morning show production and office manager. The station currently has over 51 disc-jockeys on air, almost 80 contributors and over 600 general members, all volunteers. Students who participate at WMSC have, as a result, obtained competitive internships and entry level jobs at commercial stations such as WDHA, 1010 WINS, 101.5FM, WCBS, iHeartRadio and SiriusXM among others. The WMSC Excellence in Radio Scholarship has been established to assist outstanding Montclair State University sophomore, junior, and senior students in defraying tuition costs and to afford them registration and access to industry training. The WMSC scholarship is awarded annually to one or more students who have demonstrated considerable achievement in the department and have significant potential for future creative development in the broadcast arts.

For Montclair State, Giving Tuesday represents the chance to come together as a community of loyal supporters and give back to make an impact. Office of Annual Giving What is Giving Tuesday? For Montclair State, Giving Tuesday represents the chance to come together as a community of loyal supporters and give back to make an impact by supporting the Red Hawk Pantry. This global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration is observed on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. After the widely recognized shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Since its inaugural year in 2012, Giving Tuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy with events throughout the year and a growing catalog of resources. Support the Red Hawk Pantry In April 2016, the Red Hawk Pantry opened for the first time and continues to serve the needs of our students. With your help, the pantry continues to grow and serve the needs of our students. Your support on Giving Tuesday will allow the Red Hawk Pantry to offer more hours, stock more supplies and expand its services to students.

Emergency Book Fund Drive
By Annual Giving and SDCL
Let's raise $5,000 this Summer to help students afford the tools they need to be successful in the classroom!
Let's raise $5,000 this Summer to help students afford the tools they need to be successful in the classroom! Annual Giving and SDCL This summer, let's make sure that our students are well prepared for next academic year. Open to all students, the book fund provides assistance for those who would otherwise be unable to purchase needed textbooks due to financial hardship. Established over the summer by Student Development and Campus Life, The Office of Financial Aid and The Office Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, the Emergency Book Fund was created to supplement existing book scholarships and grants.

EOF Book Fund 2019

The EOF book fund provides scholarships for highly motivated low income scholars to purchase/rent books for their courses. Educational Opportunity Fund The EOF book fund provides scholarships for highly motivated low income scholars to purchase/rent books for their courses. In the past 50+, years, EOF has been established on over 55 campuses in the state of New Jersey and sets the pace for many initiatives which today are widely incorporated into college life. Among the many powerful strategies implemented by EOF are pre-college articulation, basic skills testing and remediation, systematic retention efforts, peer counseling and peer tutoring, academic support courses, multicultural curricula and human relations programming, student leadership development, and outcomes-based program evaluation. Today, the EOF program at Montclair State serves low-income, highly motivated first-generation students who have demonstrated commitment, motivation, and potential for success in every county of the state.

Live Literature
By First Year Writing Program
We are raising funds for our Live Lit reading series! The series serves over 3,000 students.
We are raising funds for our Live Lit reading series! The series serves over 3,000 students. First Year Writing Program We are raising funds for Montclair State’s Live Literature reading series! The series serves over 3,000 students, and it is required that all First-Year Writing students in College Writing II attend a Live Lit. For many students, this is the first time they’ve attended a literary reading, and we hear time and time again how surprised they are that they actually liked the event! Many students are taught to see literature as an art form that only exists in the dusty pages of a textbook and belongs to some far-away time. When they attend Live Lit, they see that many living writers are not that different from themselves. When booking artists and performers, we prioritize featuring people of color, LGBTQ+ folks, women and femmes, people with disabilities, and those from working class backgrounds. We want students to hear stories and see art that reflects their lives and experiences, as well as to engage with lives and stories that are markedly different from their own. Funds raised will help us to host writing workshops for our students, pay writer honorariums, expand the program, and invite students to VIP receptions with featured artists and writers. Your support will also allow us to invite more filmmakers and multimedia artists.

Team Rocky: Behind the Scenes
By Student Communications
Everyone knows and loves our school mascot, Rocky the Red Hawk, but have you ever thought about what goes on behind the scenes? Or how it all started?
Everyone knows and loves our school mascot, Rocky the Red Hawk, but have you ever thought about what goes on behind the scenes? Or how it all started? Student Communications Everyone knows and loves our school mascot, Rocky the Red Hawk, but have you ever thought about what goes on behind the scenes? Or how it all started? Day-to-day operations and scheduling of Rocky, cleaning Rocky, hydrating Rocky and training the students who are Rocky and Rocky’s Handlers is no easy task! Brief History Rocky has been around since 2001 as Montclair State University’s mascot, but it wasn’t until 2015 when Team Rocky was formed. One eager and ambitious student took it upon himself to recruit others who shared the same level of Red Hawk Pride and formed a group of students (both undergraduate and graduate) whose main goal was to spread the love they had for Montclair State. Originally, there were only two or three students who actually embodied Rocky and “put on the suit,” but after the formation of Team Rocky three years ago, there can be anywhere between 10-20 students who are Rocky or Rocky’s Handler. Being Rocky A lot of people don’t realize that you can’t “just be” Rocky or Rocky’s Handler, you have to apply, audition and go through training before you can become a full member of the team! It’s hard work, can be sweaty and every single one of them do it for free. Members of Team Rocky do not get paid, and the budget they have to update and clean the outfits, provide water and transportation for Rocky to go off campus and spread Red Hawk Pride elsewhere (including Alumni Weddings) is very small. In fall 2018 alone, Team Rocky was present at/hosted more than 125 events, some of which are full day events such as Homecoming! Red Hawk Pride Team Rocky and the overall pride that Montclair State students have in this great school has grown immensely in the last three years, and it is projected to only keep getting bigger. Studies show that when a student is engaged and connected to their institution, they will get better grades and ultimately have more opportunities for better jobs after graduation. Team Rocky directly effects and positively changes this fact, one smile or high five at a time.

MSU Wind Symphony - 2019 CBDNA National Conference
By Thomas McCauley, Director
Help send the MSU Wind Symphony to the 2019 CBDNA National Conference! We need your help sending 60 student musicians and their instruments to Arizona!
Help send the MSU Wind Symphony to the 2019 CBDNA National Conference! We need your help sending 60 student musicians and their instruments to Arizona! Thomas McCauley, Director On Friday, June 1, I received a message from the President of the College Band Directors National Association telling me that our MSU Wind Symphony has been accepted and invited to appear in concert at the 2019 CBDNA National Conference, to be held at Arizona State University in February. No large ensemble from MSU has ever before been honored with an invitation such as this. Other groups chosen to appear at this conference include: Louisiana State University University of Illinois Hartt School of Music Arizona State University California State University - Fullerton University of Southern California It is thrilling to be able to tell you of this news, and I am so proud of the work our students have done to earn this invitation. As you might imagine, transporting 60 people and their instruments across the country is a costly venture, and the administration of Montclair State has already been very helpful in helping to provide financial assistance. However, given the lack of state government support of institutions of higher learning in New Jersey (NJ ranks near the bottom), we will need more financial support in order to make this tour happen. Any help you could provide would of course be appreciated, and it might be helpful to know that a tax-deductible donation of $500 would help to underwrite the cost of one student's travel to Arizona. A donation of $500 will help significantly with the cost of travel for one student. A donation of $250 will help pay for transportation for one student. A donation of $100 will help cover expenses for one student. A donation of ANY amount will help send these talented students on the trip of a lifetime! I hope you might be able to help us represent Montclair State, your business, and the state of New Jersey at the 2019 College Band Directors National Association National Conference. Sincerely, Tom McCauley Dr. Thomas McCauley Director of University Bands John J. Cali School of Music Montclair State University

Can you help us reach our goal of $1,800 in honor of this 18th birthday? All members are volunteer and must keep Rocky’s identity a secret. They must also care for the expensive suits and equipment and provide proper cleaning. They go through training and are held to a GPA requirement of 2.75 of higher. Finally, they must stay in good standing with the University at all times. Rocky Represents All Red Hawks! Team Rocky does a great deal for Montclair State University. Rocky represents all Red Hawks, and Team Rocky is made up of individuals just as diverse as our student body. Together they spread so much joy, with Rocky, and as themselves, embodying the true essence of what it means to be a proud Red Hawk. We need you to help Team Rocky grow. Your support will make it possible for Rocky to spread Red Hawk pride both on and off-campus, and will be the best birthday gift Rocky could ever receive!

Send Students to a 'Dig' in Italy!
By Department of Anthropology
Help send students on the trip of a life time an archaeological field project in Genzano di Roma, Italy, now heading into its ninth season!
Help send students on the trip of a life time an archaeological field project in Genzano di Roma, Italy, now heading into its ninth season! Department of Anthropology This archaeological field project in Genzano di Roma, Italy, now looking forward to its upcoming tenth season in summer 2019, is exploring the remains of a Roman imperial villa located 18 miles from the center of Rome in the Alban Hills region. The “Villa of the Antonines” Project is led by two MSU professors, Roman archaeologist Dr. Deborah Chatr Aryamontri and ancient historian Dr. Timothy Renner. They are assisted by four Italian professionals who are experts in excavation, architectural drawing, and the preservation of building remains. On the basis of ancient literary references and the discovery in the 18th century of marble busts of imperial figures, the villa is believed to have belonged to the second century CE imperial family of the Antonines. Near ruinous concrete pinnacles that once formed part of an ancient bath complex, the MSU excavators are uncovering an amphitheater that is smaller than the Colosseum but, like it, is equipped with rooms and tunnels beneath the arena floor to allow animals and scenic effects to be prepared. A few hundred feet uphill, with a panoramic view of the Mediterranean in the distance, is a series of rooms with mosaic floors decorated with mythical Medusa figures and rich vegetation. While at the site for four weeks during the summer, student participants receive 6 semester hours of academic credit and take part in all aspects of archaeological field excavation: digging, cleaning and documenting artifacts, and learning about how professionals survey and map an archaeological site and restore its damaged walls and floors. They also get to be part of living, working, and shopping in friendly Genzano, go on field trips with their professors, and visit museums, ancient ruins, modern neighborhoods, and churches in Rome itself. As you might imagine, sending students on this trip of a lifetime is a costly venture, and the administration of Montclair State has already been very helpful in helping to provide financial assistance. However, given the lack of state government support of institutions of higher learning in New Jersey (NJ ranks near the bottom), we will need more financial support in order to continue this proud tradition.

MIX Lab and Partners Producing PPEs to Support Local Hospitals
By Montclair State University
The MIX Lab is leading the New Jersey PPE maker's movement in response to Covid-19.
The MIX Lab is leading the New Jersey PPE maker's movement in response to Covid-19. Racing Against Time Montclair State’s MIX Lab is innovating to deliver thousands of face shields to COVID-19 front line workers. When Montclair State’s MIX Lab team started producing face shields on 3D printers amid the growing COVID-19 pandemic, they quickly realized it wasn’t enough. The team needed to figure out how to make more – and fast. “The need for PPE (personal protective equipment) is at scale,” says Iain Kerr, co-director of the MIX Lab and professor of Innovation Design. Kerr reports that in northern New Jersey alone, the demand is for hundreds of thousands of face shields, if not more. The MIX Lab, founded in 2015 and housed in Montclair State University’s Feliciano Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (FCE&I), is a facility where students and community members work together to solve problems using innovation and digitally mediated “making” – aka 3-D printing. To address the need for better design and process in making mass quantities of face shields, the MIX Lab has joined with Montclair Design Week/DesignShed and Michael Rees of William Paterson University. The team is now collaborating on everything from research to design to supply chain management to hospital interface, volunteer recruitment, social media outreach and fundraising. The MIX Lab (Making and Innovating for X, where X is the unknown) is the innovation research hub under the umbrella of the Feliciano Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation located in the Feliciano School of Business at Montclair State University. A hackathon is a short-term event in which individuals (consisting of computer programmers, graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, etc.) collaborate intensively in teams to create a working software prototype, application or product addressing a specific project or need. Our HawkHack consists of a 24-hour hacking experience followed by a series of workshops given by industry experts. We welcome non-MSU students to collaborate and compete with MSU students. We invite various companies to see the exciting projects our students can build. HawkHack will provide numerous benefits for our students and the University. Students will learn the latest trends and highly needed skills in the job market. Students will meet new people and expand their professional network. Students can interact with their counterparts from different backgrounds to generate new ideas and build awesome software or hardware projects. Students learn and practice to work as a team on a project with specified timelines. Students can add value to the their CVs. Students and their potential employers can communicate directly in a new way. As a tradition in hosting hackathons, we decide to make the registration FREE for all the participants. However, every beginning is difficult. Since this is the first time we organize such an event in MSU, we are not able to secure enough sponsorship to cover all the costs (catering, t-shirts, security coverage, housekeeping, etc., just to name a few). We humbly ask your support for our first hackathon. We plan to organize the hackathon as an annual event in the future. Your support will help us to have a successful start and enable us to secure enough sponsorship from outside companies for our future events!

Club Sports: Cheer and Dance Teams: Nationals
By Campus Recreation

Your support provides another opportunity for these teams to compete at the national level. Campus Recreation Cheer All-Girls Our team is excited to return to Daytona for Nationals for the 13th year! We have placed 2nd three times and have made it to the finals every year. This summer, we won the Gold Bid at NCA Camp at Boston University, as well as Top Overall Team, Most Spirited, and Game Day performance. The team consists of 23 women with several who are NCA All- Americans. Our coaches, Jayne and Staci Shalkowski, are dedicated to our team’s success. Jayne has been head coach at Montclair for 13 years and works with both the All-Girls and Coed teams. Staci has been coaching since her graduation from Montclair State. She is a former NCAA II American and NCA staffer. Our team also does many public appearances. We teach a junior cheer clinic each year where young cheerleaders come out to learn and perform at half time of a Montclair State Football game. We also run various clinics with local high schools, pop warner, AYC, and elementary schools. We love having the opportunity to represent Montclair State University Cheer at Nationals every year and we would love your help to get there! Cheer Coed Our team is brand new this year! We are beyond excited to qualify for Nationals with such a new program. Our team consists of 3 boys and 10 girls. Our coach, Kelly McGuirl, is a graduate student at Montclair and is a former cheer caption of the All-Girls team! Dance Team The Montclair State Dance Team (MSDT) is a nationally-ranked team that has represented the University over the past five years. In 2014, students created the MSDT to give dancers an opportunity to perform at school events and compete at the national level. MSDT performs at football and basketball games, as well as other events on campus, with hip-hop, jazz, and pom routines. The team travels to the National Dance Alliance (NDA) Collegiate Dance Team Championship in Daytona, Florida. While competing at this most prestigious college dance competition in the United States, MSDT holds a 2018 National Championship Title in DIII Team Performance. This was their first year competing at this competition. This year, MSDT will be competing in DIII Team Performance and DIII Hip Hop, for the first time. The cost to run the program is student driven with guidance and oversight by the Student Recreation Center and coaching staff. As we continue to grow our team, our costs increase. We raise money through dancer dues, donations, and fundraisers. Dancers must pay to participate through dues and personal cost to purchase uniforms, costumes, and shoes. Your support provides another opportunity for our dancers to alleviate some personal cost. We are very proud of these young women for their accomplishments on the stage. We are equally proud of their support and active participation in University programs. Their initiative and commitment to further the team and represent Montclair State University in a most positive manner is without question. We welcome and greatly appreciate any support for our dancers! Funding will be utilized to provide per diem money for cheerleaders, while the dance team is in need of purchasing additional practice space in Daytona Beach to continue working during their downtime at Nationals.

By donating, you are able to help us grow stronger, help us obtain more experience, and hopefully gain a new title as National Champions. Campus Recreation The Montclair State Men’s Club Basketball Team was founded in the 2011-2012 Academic Year. Its founder and former president, Mark Johnson, established the club in the spirit of providing an opportunity to compete with those who either were not given the opportunity to play on the NCAA level or those who chose to play in a less strenuous atmosphere. Now going into its 8th year, the Men’s Club Basketball Team still holds onto their values, which are fostering community and family, developing teamwork, and having fun, in addition to proudly representing Montclair State. The NIRSA National Championship Series holds many new opportunities for our team. Throughout the years, we have been able to grow a stronger bond on and off the court with our team mates. By donating, you are able to help us grow stronger, help us obtain more experience, and hopefully gain a new title as National Champions. A team is not truly a team without a loyal fan base, encouraging friends, and supporting families. They are the backbone to every player and the team as a whole. We appreciate every single donation made to helping us become National Champions. NIRSA is an organization that operates on the national level, providing intercollegiate competition for a variety of sports throughout the year. The tournament that we are attending, the National Championship Series for Basketball, is one that has gained great notoriety. This year, it is being hosted by Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. In last year’s tournament, taking place at The Ohio State University, there were 99 diverse and very talented teams from the Men’s Club, Men’s Intramural, Women’s Club, Women’s Intramural, and Unified Sports that participated. The Men’s Club division, in which we were contenders and plan to win this year, is comprised of 36 teams, with MSU proudly being the only representative from New Jersey and being the only Division III Club program. It is an amazing experience to see so many different schools and levels coming together to honor the game of basketball and participate in a chance to bring a National Championship home. Highlights: League: National Club Basketball Association (NCBBA) 3rd Year Conference: North Atlantic Region, South Conference Record (as of 1/22/19): 9-2 (2-1 NARS) Past Tournaments Attended: NIRSA Regional Championship Series, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, 2016 and 2017 NIRSA National Championship Series, The Ohio State University, 2018 Funding will be utilized to provide transportation to and from games while in Wichita, and will also be used to provide a per diem for players.

Save Our Water!
By Yaritza Acosta
Your donations will help us to purchase an incubator - a tool that enables us to grow small populations of algae - for our laboratory.
Your donations will help us to purchase an incubator - a tool that enables us to grow small populations of algae - for our laboratory. Yaritza Acosta The presence of algae in lakes and rivers is natural, and algae are important parts of a healthy environment. However, populations of algae can grow out control; we call these population explosions “Harmful Algal Blooms,” or HABs, for short. HABs can quickly turn an entire lake green and kill the creatures living in the water, often leaving dead fish floating on the surface or along the shores. HABs also pose serious health risks to people and pets: toxic substances produced by the algae become dangerously concentrated in the water. Ingesting or coming into contact with contaminated water can cause abdominal pain, headaches, rashes, and even kidney damage in people; pets can experience fatal liver or respiratory failure. Because HABs can create these serious health problems, they often lead to a ban on swimming, boating, and fishing in any affected waters. Your donations will help us to purchase an incubator- a tool that enables us to grow small populations of algae - for our laboratory. Studying the algae we grow allows us to determine the causes of HABs, as well as the most effective ways to prevent and treat them. Additionally, we can collect and maintain populations of native algae in our incubator; if any species should happen to go extinct in our natural ecosystems, we will ensure that they have a chance of making a recovery. Please consider making a donation now to help preserve our environment, and our healthful way of life in New Jersey.

Bonner Program Summer Service Learning Trip

We are fundraising for our summer service trip. Every summer in August we spend an intensive week learning about the value and importance of helping others.
We are fundraising for our summer service trip. Every summer in August we spend an intensive week learning about the value and importance of helping others. Bonner Program Montclair State University is one of more than 60 colleges and universities nation-wide honored to host a Bonner Leaders Program. Bonner Leaders commit to an average of 10 hours of service a week and 300 hours for the academic year. These hours are made up primarily of service to a community agency or project, but also from activities such as in-service workshops, training sessions, and retreats that address pertinent issues and teach valuable, transferable skills. As Bonner Leaders at MSU, members... participate in mentoring and tutoring programs with community partners; support charitable initiatives on campus; attend local, state, and national training meetings, retreats; and lead on-campus or local community service projects. We are fundraising for our summer service trip. Every summer in August we spend an intensive week learning about the value and importance of helping others. We travel to Hazlet, NJ where we stay at a local church in volunteer housing. We work with a non profit, Jersey Shore Workcamp, which was developed to help repair homes for local residents with financial challenges. Bonners get to know their residents and assist in home repair. Through this service Bonners are able to help in local communities, create strong bonds, and learn real-world construction skills. Your support will help us make this trip a success!
