The Emergency Book Fund provides assistance for those who would otherwise be unable to purchase needed textbooks due to financial hardship. <p><span>[[Amount Raised]]</span></p> We all know that students need the proper tools to succeed in the classroom and that school supplies can be very costly. Help us as we come together to assist Montclair State students in need. The Emergency Book Fund is open to all students and assists those who would otherwise be unable to purchase needed textbooks due to financial hardship. Established by Student Development and Campus Life, The Office of Financial Aid and The Office of Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement, the Emergency Book Fund was created to supplement existing book scholarships and grants. Margaree Coleman-Carter, Dean of Students, has seen the immediate impact that your donations made. “Students have been pouring into our office to apply for the funds, says Dean Carter. “There is a great need for this type of support for our students, and students have expressed their appreciation for this resource. The Emergency Book Fund will allow more deserving students an opportunity to purchase books and supplies critical to their academic success this semester.”

The Red Hawk Pantry serves the needs of students who may be struggling with issues of food insecurity and other basic needs. <p><span>[[Amount Raised]]</span></p> Montclair State University has been addressing the needs of our students who suffer from food insecurity through the Red Hawk Pantry which provides food and toiletry items for students in need. <em>"This year, we have seen an overwhelming increase in students visiting the Red Hawk Pantry – now averaging 1,000 students each month, and I can tell you, they are so very grateful for this resource," said Adela Caceres, Director of the Office for Social Justice and Diversity. “A gift of $25 would help us feed 2 students a week. Those dollars go a long way in helping us keep our shelves stocked with food and necessities. We cannot say thank you enough for donor support."</em> Now more than ever, with the escalating cost of groceries, gas and our current economic climate, donor support for our pantry is a necessity. <strong>Your support</strong><strong> </strong>allows the pantry to purchase needed food and toiletry items to keep our shelves stocked throughout the year. Donations also allow the pantry to adapt to the changing needs of our student population.

Wayne Bond was a great teacher, mentor and friend. Now, we're asking you to help create his MSU legacy by coming together to name a room in the SCM building. <span>[[Amount Raised]]</span> School of Communication& Media Wayne Bond was a great teacher, mentor and friend here at Montclair State. Now, we're asking you to help create his Montclair State legacy by coming together to name a room in the School of Communication and Media complex. We want to recognize Wayne's influence, dedication and commitment to teaching countless generations. Much has happened on the campus of Montclair State since we graduated. Walking through the well maintained grounds, one cannot help but marvel at the physical growth and fresh look of this former Teacher’s College and our world when we attended classes here. Historic Morehead Hall, which previously served as a demonstration high school and was the location of Dr. Sobolik’s Intro to Theatre class in the small auditorium was fully renovated in 2014 and is now the center of activities for the College of the Arts and the faculty and staff of the School of Communication and Media where television and digital media are now housed. Through it all, one professor, lived, breathed and stood by us, encouraging and guiding us, sometimes gently, other times sternly, but always seeking to draw the best out of us. We are referring to Dr. Wayne Bond, chairperson of the Speech and Theater department when we were at Montclair State. Dr. Bond was a champion of many of our endeavors and even in the most frustrating times: like when Players challenged use of Memorial Auditorium, or the prop room was moved into his office to make a point, or when the issues emerged in the speech or methods class, he always treated us as adults and never as “students to be dealt with”. So now, we have an opportunity to recognize and add to the legacy of Dr. Bond by dedicating and naming a space for him in the new building for the School of Communication and Media. We are looking to raise $15,000 to dedicate and name a mediated team room in honor of Dr. Bond. <strong>This is a surprise for Dr. Bond, so don't let it slip that plans are underway! </strong>In addition to naming a room in the new building after Dr. Bond we are hoping to raise enough money to bring him and Jane back for a surprise dedication ceremony on campus when the building opens. Please accept our gratitude in advance for your gift. We look forward to welcoming you to the unveiling and a time of reconnecting with colleagues and our professors. Our programs: <ul> <li><em>Films and Filmmakers Series</em> - a weekly film screening and discussion with leading independent filmmakers.</li> <li><em>Reel Montclair: Dialogue with the Screenwriter</em> – a monthly film conversation series with leading writers in film and television, from seasoned writers to emerging voices.</li> <li><em>Sunday Screening Series</em> – a screening series that is a deep dive into some of the most well-known directors and their work. The MSUCCG will use funds generated to provide resources for our garden, in order to continue to grow and provide produce to our students in need. <p><span>[[Amount Raised]]</span></p> <strong>Overview</strong> The Montclair State University Campus Community Garden (MSUCCG) was founded in 2018 as a new community garden at MSU, open to all students, staff, and faculty members. We reclaimed and revitalized underutilized space on the campus, and have established 20 raised garden beds, totaling 1,000 square feet of growing space, that we open up to our community members each year. We work to provide our gardeners with all of the necessary tools and training to have a successful growing season, and grow all of our produce as sustainably as possible. During the season, we provide fresh produce to the Red Hawk Pantry, MSU’s on campus food pantry for students in need. Outside of the growing season, we work with student groups to help increase awareness of student food needs, provide resources and support for addressing food insecurity on campus, and engage in research to monitor food insecurity on campus. <strong>Vision</strong> We see the garden as a way to strengthen the connections between members of the Montclair State University community and bring our community closer together, while sustainably providing fresh foods and educational resources to our community members in need. <strong>Mission</strong> Our mission is to donate our locally grown produce and work with members of our campus community to increase awareness of our local food systems, our relative level of food security, and foster a culture of sustainability and giving back to the community. <strong>The Need</strong> During the Spring 2019 Semester, students were invited to participate in research about food security on campus. A total of 628 students completed the survey. The survey included a modified version of the USDA Adult Food Security Survey, modified to better address an audience of university students; the survey asked questions that are intended to identify food security during the duration of the Spring Semester. The data suggest that more than 4 out of every 10 students who responded to the survey may be Food Insecure during the academic semester, and may not have access to enough food, or have only low quality foods, on a regular basis. <strong>Who benefits</strong> The work performed by the MSUCCG directly benefits students in need at Montclair State University via the Red Hawk Pantry, by providing them with fresh, local produce. We work to provide additional produce to our partner, the Montclair Community Farm, who provides food to older adults living in Montclair that do not have regular access to fresh produce. To accomplish this, the MSUCCG is proudly partnered with: <ul> <li>The Red Hawk Pantry at Montclair State</li> <li>The Montclair State University chapter of the Food Recovery Network</li> <li>The Montclair Community Farms</li> </ul> <strong>Use of funds</strong> The MSUCCG will use funds generated to provide resources for our garden, in order to continue to grow and provide produce to our students in need. This includes recurring expenses for expended items, such as: <ol> <li>Seeds</li> <li>Soil amendments</li> <li>Pest deterrents</li> <li>Tools for safe food handling, preparation, and distribution</li> </ol> This includes one-time expenses for improvements to the project, such as: <ol> <li>Improving safe food handling and storage capability</li> <li>Improving on-site storage capability</li> <li>Improving composting capability</li> <li>Improving or repairing site fixtures</li> <li>Educational, outreach, or promotional materials</li> <li>Record-keeping or research supplies</li> </ol>

CHSS and FSBUS are pleased to announce the launch of a new interdisciplinary degree in Language, Business & Culture. <p><span>[[Amount Raised]]</span></p> The College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Feliciano School of Business are pleased to announce the launch of a new interdisciplinary degree in Language, Business & Culture. Students can invest in personal global marketability by selecting this unified program of business fundamentals and a language concentration with a choice of Arabic, French, German, Italian or Spanish. “The B.A. in Language, Business & Culture promotes the importance of language and culture studies in an increasingly global society and marketplace,” says Dr. Enza Antenos, Italian professor of Modern Languages at Montclair State. “It provides the liberal arts and business background that students need to become functioning, effective and educated citizens of the global community.” Majors explore the relevance of foreign language learning in a globalized world by honing target-language skills and applying knowledge to a range of business and professional-related fields. Help us raise funds for a scholarship in honor of Klaus Schnitzer who is retiring after 40 years teaching photo. <p><span>[[Amount Raised]]</span></p> <em><strong>Past to Present: The Photographic Legacy of Klaus Schnitzer. </strong></em> This show will illustrate Prof. Schnitzer’s pedagogical legacy in his teaching of photography over the past forty years: first by developing a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of the medium, and secondly, balancing that comprehension by shaping the students' eye to the camera, bringing out their creative side. By “exposing” his photographic vision to his students, he lead to their self-discovery as photographers. It is only fitting that we now recognize his influence in the field and honor him by establishing a named scholarship which will carry on his legacy for future generations of students.

The interactions we have with our students, faculty, staff and families make a huge impact, and to this day, all Team Rocky members volunteer their time to make a difference in our community. We've grown and expanded over the years thanks to the dedication of our advisors and members; the passion they have for expanding school pride and overall inclusivity is loud and clear.  Quick History & Timeline<ul><li>In 2001 “Rocky” was hatched on October 5 after a student vote as our school mascot.</li><li>In 2015 Team Rocky was formally established thanks to former Graduate Coordinator Kyle Kowal, former Director Cindy Meneghin and former VP Karen L. Pennington.</li><li>In 2017 Rocky celebrated his birthday for the first time. Every day, 365 days a year, Montclair State University volunteer their time to cover their community on campus and beyond, amplifying local stories and providing a platform to local artists.  The student-run operation gives undergraduate students hands-on experience that lands them internships and their first job at major radio companies such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, and ABC Radio. An anonymous donor matched the first $1,000 match gift and now offered another $1,000 match. The amazing response to Dr. Gilbert, the success hotline and his passion for recognizing and awarding amazing faculty has been incredible. </strong> <strong>Let's join the effort by October 31 and make an impact to unlock an additional $1,000 for The Robert Ellis Gilbert Endowed Award. </strong> The Robert Ellis Gilbert Endowed Award for Positive Impact in Teaching Fund is being established to honor Dr. “Rob” Gilbert and his extraordinary impact as an Associate Professor in the College for Community Health at Montclair State University for the past 45 years. Thanks to generous supporters, the fund has reached the endowment threshold and will be awarded this fall to an outstanding Montclair State faculty member who embodies Dr. Gilbert’s lasting impact as an educator. The $1,000 challenge provides an opportunity to continue growing the endowment and extend Rob’s legacy for years to come. Dr. Gilbert teaches sports psychology in the Kinesiology Department, where he has inspired students, alumni, parents, colleagues, fans, and friends through his classroom teaching, books, and “Success Hotline.” Anyone can call his Success Hotline and listen to his three-minute outgoing motivational message, which he has never missed a single day in 33 years. As of April 2025, he has left nearly 12,500 messages, sharing his message of motivation and positivity with countless people. The Robert Ellis Gilbert Endowed Award for Positive Impact in Teaching will be awarded annually to a current faculty member who has positively impacted the lives of their students and the Montclair State University community over a significant period of their teaching career. This award honors a member of the MSU faculty who excels at teaching, inspiring, and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students. The honoree must demonstrate a lasting dedication to the ideals of higher education at Montclair State University and the highest standard of excellence, inspiring academic rigor, engagement, and intellectual curiosity. The award is meant to acknowledge a faculty member who demonstrates exemplary commitment to their students, is known for their passion for teaching, and inspires students, colleagues, and friends in similar ways. The fund will support the University and its programs that assist students while creating a lasting tribute to the positive impact of exceptional teaching and mentorship. <strong>By making a gift by October 31, you can help us meet the new challenge of an additional $1,000 for the fund. A gift of any amount will make an impact and help ensure that Dr. Gilbert’s legacy of inspiring others continues for generations to come.</strong>

Dr. Kathleen Sunshine Endowed Fund for Global Education Kathleen Sunshine, PhD, is a distinguished Professor Emerita of Communications and former Dean of Contemporary Arts at Ramapo College of New Jersey where she also served as Director of the College’s International Telecommunications Center Across her career, Dr. Sunshine demonstrated a commitment to intercultural understanding and global engagement as cornerstones of higher education.  She not only pursued academic partnerships around the globe, she created opportunities for students to gain international experiences, often the first of their lives. Sunshine produced two television series with university students—Intercultural Perspectives and International Perspectives—which aired on New Jersey Public Television. She secured a multi-million dollar grant to bring satellite access to Ramapo that facilitated, among other innovative programs, joint classes between Ramapo and Russian students. She created a unique study abroad opportunity in Venice that ran for many years even following her retirement in 2007. A recipient of two Fulbright Senior Specialist Grants in Thailand and Ukraine, Dr. Sunshine worked as a journalist in India and served as a consultant in the United Kingdom, Russia, Mexico, China, Azerbaijan, and across West Africa. She earned her BA from Queens College, CUNY, and both her MA and PhD from Harvard University. In recognition of Dr. Sunshine’s distinguished career and in honor of her commitment to integrating international engagement into all aspects of university life, Montclair State University is proud to establish the Dr. Kathleen Sunshine Endowed Fund for Global Education with a foundational gift of $50,000 from Dr. Jonathan GS Koppell and Dr. Jennifer A. Steen.  The fund will be used to expand opportunities for Montclair students who otherwise wouldn’t have access to the transformative experiences that international exchange create.

The Robert Ellis Gilbert Endowed Award for Positive Impact in Teaching <p><strong>[[Amount Raised]] RAISED TO DATE</strong></p> <strong>The Robert Ellis Gilbert Endowed Award for Positive Impact in Teaching Fund is being established in spring 2025 to honor Dr. "Rob" Gilbert </strong>and his impact as an Associate Professor in the College for Community Health at Montclair State University for the past 45 years. Dr. Gilbert teaches sports psychology in the Kinesiology Department, where he has inspired students, alumni, parents, colleagues, fans, and friends through his classroom teaching, books, and "Success Hotline." Anyone can call his Success Hotline and listen to his 3-minute outgoing motivational message, where he has never missed a single day in 33 years!  As of April 2025, he has left nearly 12,500 messages!  The Robert Ellis Gilbert Endowed Award for Positive Impact in Teaching will be awarded annually in the spring to a current faculty member who has positively impacted the lives of his students and the Montclair State University community over a significant period of his teaching career. This award honors a member of the MSU faculty who excels at teaching, inspiring, and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students. The honoree must demonstrate lasting dedication to ideals of higher education at Montclair State University and the highest standard of excellence, inspiring academic rigor, engagement, and intellectual curiosity. This award is meant to acknowledge a faculty member who demonstrates exemplary commitment to their students, is known for their passion for teaching, and inspires students, colleagues, and friends in similar ways. In addition, Ken was one of the original members of the American Federation of Teachers Local 1904, holding the position of Chief Negotiator for over 35 years. In all of these endeavors, he left a lasting legacy for the Faculty, Staff, Librarians, and Specialists. He was devoted to our students, and to strengthening their education and sense of self through civically engaged learning. Ting Ho Scholarship Fund will provide crucial financial support to an emerging Cali School of Music composition students, <strong>In Loving Memory - Ting Ho</strong> Ting Ho of Hatboro passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at the age of 77. He was the beloved husband of Jean Ho with whom he had shared 52 years of marriage. He was born in Chung King, China a son of the late Pao-Hsu and Gertrude Ho. Ting was an award winning composer, whose pieces were played internationally.  He became a Professor Emeritus of Music at Montclair State University where he taught for over 48 years. He enjoyed reading a good mystery novel and built model cars as a hobby. Ting had three passions in his life, his music his teaching and his family. In addition to his wife Jean, Ting is survived by his daughters, Maia Reynolds and Leah Ho, three grandchildren Alexis Reynolds, Kody Reynolds and Shane Chubb. Your donation to the Ting Ho Scholarship Fund will provide crucial financial support to an emerging Cali School of Music composition student by covering tuition fees, study materials, and mentorship opportunities. Montclair State University is doing research to find a solution against the infestation of Spotted Lantern Flies Office of Annual Giving <strong>Summer in New Jersey</strong> From Memorial Day to Labor Day, we pack our weekends with trips down the shore, boating on our lakes, and backyard BBQs. Ahhh, the great outdoors is how we like to spend summers in New Jersey.  <strong>But now we have an invader to contend with and we have had it! </strong> Are you tired of stepping on Spotted Lantern Flies? Concerned about their impact on New Jersey vineyards and orchards? Montclair State is doing something about it! Research in our College of Science and Mathematics is aimed at discovering a way to control Spotted Lanternflies without harming pollinators (like bees and butterflies) or other important and beneficial insects. <strong>The Problem</strong> <em>Lycorma delicatula</em>, commonly known as the Spotted Lantern Fly, are a persistent problem with limited effective methods of extermination. Studies show that insecticides or less toxic methods like glue sticky pads on tree trunks can all be effective. However, as the insect continues to affect New Jersey agriculture and personal homes and gardens, an environmentally sustainable method of control is needed. Surprisingly, fungi have been found to be a promising possibility for biocontrol. In a 2020 study by a research group led by Eric Clifton of Cornell University, a single application of <em>Beauveria bassiana</em> (a common fungus known to infect insects) reduced young Spotted Lantern Flies by as much as 48% and can further decrease adult populations after 2 weeks. Using fungi may be an innovative method of biocontrol when considering the harmful effects insecticides can pose on sensitive populations of beneficial insects. To deploy this method of control safely, a much deeper understanding of the fungi associated with the Spotted Lantern Fly is required. <strong>Objective</strong> With increasing globalization comes the increasing challenge of invasive species affecting ecosystem health, agriculture and human well-being. The Spotted Lantern Fly is a recent invader with especially destructive impacts on New Jersey agriculture and gardens.  <strong>The objective of our research is to understand the fungal biome of the Spotted Lantern Fly and its direct environment in the hopes of isolating an environmentally friendly biocontrol agent. </strong> <strong>With your help,</strong> we can better understand the microbiology of this insect pest and even help work to develop an environmentally safe management strategy. We will study the DNA of the insects themselves and their environment using the most cutting-edge technology allowing for a deep and sophisticated understanding. This technology comes at a cost, but the reward is profound. The Red Hawk Fellows program is committed to supporting Montclair State undergraduate scholars from diverse backgrounds who are identified as emancipated foster students, unaccompanied homeless students and those student from households where no immediate parental or extended family guidance is accessible. At the end of the day, we recognize support is critical to your success in so many ways. As a Red Hawk Fellow, you will get access to unique programs to support your academic success, career development goals, and personal development to help you take steps towards building a strong future. Students are provided access to a full-time case manager. This case manager offers a depth of knowledge on community resources including knowledge of options for students aging out of the foster care system. Students are also afforded the opportunity to meet 1-1 with a skilled professional to address roadblocks to success. SOAR (Study Abroad Opportunity & Resource) Scholarships in September 2022 to bring study abroad within the financial reach of as many Red Hawks as possible. <p>SOAR Study Abroad Scholarships</p> The Office of International Academic Initiatives offers programs for students in over 50 countries around the world, in nearly every academic discipline. Students can participate in a variety of programs including, semester exchange, summer programs, affiliated programs or faculty-led programs over school breaks. With seed funding from the Provost's office, we launched the SOAR Scholarship program for study abroad in 2022. We have had a tremendous response from students on campus and are seeing greater demand for the enriching opportunities that come from studying abroad. A<strong>s a result of new scholarship support, IAI recruited and advised 37 students to study abroad in Summer 2023, the highest count since 2010. </strong>Under the leadership of new IAI Director Tim White, we are hoping to expand access to our study abroad and study away opportunities to an even wider variety of MSU students, regardless of financial background. With the generous support of alumni, friends and community members we can add new scholarships that directly support the experiences of our students. The IAI Office plans to use scholarship funds to bring study abroad within the financial reach of as many students as possible, and <strong>we will work to ensure that all MSU students know that study abroad is indeed for them</strong>. Scholarship in memory of Elisa Michel who was to graduate in May 2023 with a BA in French Translation and International Studies. <strong>In Loving Memory - Elisa Michel</strong> <strong>March 25, 2023</strong> This award is in memory of Elisa Michel, who passed away in March 2023 just weeks shy of graduating from Montclair State University with a BA in French Translation and International Studies. Already trilingual in English, Spanish, and French, Elisa was passionate about languages, with plans to add even more languages to her repertoire. She had the opportunity to study abroad in Paris in the summer of 2022, an experience which opened up so many new doors for her. She was hired by the Spanish and Latino Studies programs as one of the Communicative Workshop Assistants for beginning Spanish courses helping, every semester, around 100 students with their conversational skills. She loved helping students and was very resourceful and helpful. It is in honor of Elisa’s love of travel and the cultures of the world that we offer this scholarship. Eligible to apply are French or Spanish majors and minors with demonstrated financial need, who wish to study abroad to enhance their linguistic and cultural proficiency. The David Amutah Legacy Scholarship is intended to support the education and/or professional pursuits of an aspiring filmmaker at Montclair State University. <strong>In Loving Memory - </strong><strong>David Chinonyerem Amutah</strong> <strong> </strong><strong>October 30, 1991 – January 9, 2023</strong> Master David Chinonyerem Amutah was born on October 30, 1991, to Mrs. Abigail and Mr. Solomon Amutah in Trenton, New Jersey, and was granted his angel wings on January 9, 2023. He was the youngest of Mrs. Abigail Amutah’s four children. He was baptized and raised as a Christian at the First Baptist Church of Trenton, where he was active in the church's Baptist Youth Fellowship group and Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (T.A.S.K). David attended Trenton Public Schools through 8th grade, when he received admission to and a full scholarship for the prestigious Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. While boarding at the Lawrenceville School, David studied Latin, served as president of the filmmaking club, and participated in intramural football. After graduating from high school, David studied film production at Hofstra University and Mercer County Community College before completing his studies in filmmaking at Montclair State University by obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree. Following his graduation David remained connected to Montclair through his mentorship of undergraduates including an impending guest lecture in late January 2023, further showcasing his love for his Red Hawk family. David subsequently worked as a Motion Graphic Designer for IMGN Media at Warner Music Group up until his untimely passing. He directed his own films including <em>The Song Is Over</em> (2015) and <em>Corndog</em> (2019). He lent his creative talent to various other film productions and contributed to the completion of over 12 short films. He also completed an internship with one of his idols–legendary filmmaker John Sayles–and was an avid lover of music, food, his family, and various sports teams including the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, and Chelsea FC.  David will always be remembered for his infectious smile, obedience, humility, broad intelligence, kind heart, and generous spirit. Those who were fortunate enough to know him can testify that the quality of his existence far exceeded the quantity of time in which he blessed this Earth. <strong>The David Amutah Legacy Scholarship is intended to support the education and/or professional pursuits of an aspiring filmmaker at Montclair State University.</strong> Candidates from historically marginalized backgrounds will be given first preference. With the award, the Amutah family hopes to help current undergraduates purchase textbooks, secure equipment, enter film festivals, and more as David did.

In collaboration with Montclair State’s Pre-Law Society, the Pre-Law Program is pleased offer students an annual Mock Trial Competition, New Jersey’s Law School Admissions Day, Court Case Spotlight Series, visits to law schools, and the U.S. Capitol. Your gift will help us improve and expand upon these initiatives and ultimately, produce positive outcomes for our pre-law students. A gift to the Pre-Law Program Fund directly supports pre-law students at Montclair State University and in New Jersey. Nel and James Noddings scholarship is for individuals in their student teaching semester who are preparing to be math teachers. In honor of our late mother, Nel, we remember how both she and our late father, Jim, were strong believers in the power of higher education. Nel Noddings, a renowned educational philosopher, recalls seeing the dome at MSU from her elementary school classroom and knew at a young age that she wanted to attend MSU and become a teacher. She and her late husband Jim established the Nel and James Noddings scholarship, thinking of the many Montclair State students today who—like Nel—are the first in the family to go to school of modest means, in need of a scholarship. The scholarship is for individuals in their student teaching semester who are preparing to be math teachers. In additional to being remembered as a philosopher, Nel was a feminist, a matriarch, and an engaged citizen of the world. Nel was a prodigious writer with more than twenty books and monographs in print that have been translated into fourteen languages including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew and Turkish. She is best known for her ethic of care described in her first book Caring: A Feminine Approach to Ethics & Moral Education published by the University of California Press in 1984. In 2013 she changed the title replacing the word feminine with feminist. Her four decades of published work demonstrate the breadth of her intellect and interests as the following titles illustrate:  Women and Evil; Constructivist Views on the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics; Educating for Intelligent Belief or Unbelief; Philosophy of Education (now in its fourth edition this textbook has been translated into 8 languages); Happiness and Education; When School Reform Goes Wrong; A Richer, Brighter Vision for American High Schools; and Teaching Controversial Issues: The Case for Critical Thinking and Moral Commitment in the Classroom. Nel received her Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and Physical Science from Montclair State College in New Jersey in 1949, a Masters in Mathematics from Rutgers University, New Jersey in 1964 and her PhD in Educational Philosophy and Theory from Stanford University in California in 1973. After more than twenty years at Stanford University, Nel retired as the Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education, Emerita and then taught at both Colgate University and Teachers College Columbia both in New York. Nel and her husband Jim had five children of their own and had served as foster parents several times before they began adopting and taking in friends and relatives. At the time of their sixtieth wedding anniversary in 2009, there were fourteen people present at the event who had at some point in their lives called Nel “Mom.” Nel’s husband Jim of more than sixty years died in 2012 at their last family home together at the beach in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Nel moved to Key Largo, Florida in October of 2021.  Nel and Jim converted their aspirations into action by providing much needed financial support through the scholarship they endowed in their names. Nel leaves a long legacy of supporting students and future educators at Montclair State University College of Education and Human Services. As an alumna and honorary advisory board member, she was incredibly influential to many at the College of Education and Human Services. Provide support to help bring Dr. and Mrs. Lushyn to Montclair State. Office of Annual Giving <strong>Who is Dr. Pavlo Lushyn?</strong> Dr. Pavlo Lushyn is an Educational Psychologist and Chair of the Psychology Department at the University of Educational Management, Academy for Educational Studies in Kyiv, Ukraine. He is the author of over 200 research articles, book chapters, reports, and books on applied and educational psychology as well as philosophy for education. Dr. Lushyn is the recipient of honors and medals from the Ukrainian government’s Ministry of Education and from professional societies, such as the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.  <strong>Renowned Faculty to Ukrainian Refugee</strong> In the early morning of February 24, 2022, Dr. Lushyn and the other residents of Kyiv awoke to the sounds of massive explosions from missiles and rockets fired by Russian forces. The war in Ukraine had reached the capital. Along with friends and neighbors, Dr. Lushyn and his wife, with nothing more than blankets and a change of clothing, spent the next days and nights huddled in the cramped basement of a building that served as their air-raid shelter. As news spread that Russian shelling was targeting not only airfields and factories, but also residential homes, <strong>Dr. Lushyn and his wife made the heartbreaking decision to leave their entire lives behind—their home, possessions, and country of birth—and flee for their lives. </strong> They traveled from Kyiv past the city of Poltava, where Dr. Lushyn’s parents were born and buried, through Kropyvnytskyi, the city of his youth, through Moldvova and Romania, and finally to Hausham, a small town outside of Munich, Germany. Ten days and around 2000 kilometers after the first bombs hit Kyiv, Dr. Lushyn and his wife began their new life as war refugees living in the basement of his German host where Dr. Lushyn is doing his best to help fellow refugees who had suffered psychological trauma.  <strong>Together, We Can Help!</strong> With the support of many amazing and caring individuals at Montclair State University, Dr. Lushyn has recently been offered a temporary faculty position at the Educational Foundations Department of the College of Education and Human Services. He and his wife will arrive this summer.  The <strong>generosity of the Montclair State community</strong> would greatly benefit their transition to Montclair. The Don and Judy Miller Scholarship supports students in the visual arts at Montclair State University In this year since our mother’s, Judy, passing, we remember how both she and our father, Don, were strong believers that through education you can empower young men and women to achieve their potential. They established The Don and Judy Miller Scholarship for the Visual Arts at Montclair State University so that their vision will carry for generations of students benefiting from the support the scholarship offeres them. It was a point of pride for our parents and in turn for all family members. Don Miller grew up in Montclair and he and Judy raised our family in Montclair.  They were active in local political, cultural and educational activities throughout their lives.  In 1992, Don was privileged to present what would be the final exhibition of his art within his lifetime, at the University Galleries on the campus of Montclair State. That is when Don and Judy saw that additional support is needed if students who were first in their families to attend college were to pursue their passion in the fine arts. Furthermore, Don found that mentoring young artists was a rewarding way to give back to his community, while Judy, who was a college educator, saw the transformational power in encouraging young people to fulfill their potential. They converted their aspirations into action by providing much needed financial support through the scholarship they endowed in their names. Ruth and Oscar Ravina Talent Award at Montclair State University supports students in the Cali School of Music. <em>We are deeply sorry to share the news of the recent passing of Ruth Ravina and invite you to continue her and Oscar's legacy with a gift to the Ruth and Oscar Ravina Talent Award Scholarship.</em> Ruth and Oscar Ravina surrounded themselves with music and used music as a way to inspire and help. In Montclair, everyone knew the Ravina home: Oscar gave music lessons and Ruth would provide a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on, for students, who for one reason or another were in various degrees of distress. In a 2019 interview she gave to Michael Yashinsky for the Wexler Oral History Project, Ruth describes her reaction at the first time she heard Oscar play violin: “I melted like butter; my jaw dropped; I had never heard playing like that before. He had the most gorgeous sound – that what he was known for, the sound”. Oscar’s stellar career spanned four decades as member of the NY Philharmonic,  concertmaster of the Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York and several other prestigious chamber music ensembles, and solo concert performances under the direction of major conductors. Oscar’s passion for music also made him a beloved and sought-after teacher. He wanted to inspire future generations of musicians. For 25 years, Montclair students had the benefit of being taught by Oscar. After his passing, students and colleagues honored his memory by establishing the Ruth and Oscar Ravina Talent Award at Montclair State University. Ruth and Oscar were a team. For Ruth’s 85th birthday in 2022, her strength and all the love and support she brought to the Ravina family was honored with a special screening of the award-winning documentary “An Inconvenient Time” by director Denny Klein. It features Ruth sharing, in her own words, her resilience in surviving the Holocaust. Her message of hope and persistence through adversity strongly aligns with the mission of the Ruth and Oscar Ravina Talent Award. The Ruth and Oscar Ravina Talent Award enables student musicians, sometimes first in their families to attend college, to breathe just a little easier and dedicate themselves fully to their craft, instead of worrying about the student debt they would face upon graduation.     The Ravina family is committed to continuing and expanding the legacy in honor of Ruth and Oscar. Paul Shields Jr. Scholarship College of the Arts Montclair State University</p> <em>F. Paul Shields Jr. (MFA '01) was a widely acclaimed exhibiting artist and soon to be faculty member in the MFA program at nearby Drew University at the time of his tragic passing. Paul was a deep scholar of the fine arts in addition to a practitioner. He was exhibiting his work throughout the country during his MFA and at the time of his passing. His work spanned media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, large scale installations, happenings and even jewelry making. </em> <em></em> <em>Paul was an extraordinary son, friend, classmate and mentor to many other students in the community. Our goal is to empower these young musicians to pursue their dreams, and to make higher education more accessible. <strong>Program Information</strong> Cali Pathways identifies talented and motivated students in grades 8-12, and assists them in bridging gaps that may otherwise preclude them from achieving their full musical potential. Clubs take on thousands of dollars in costs! <p><strong><span class="fr-deletable">[[Amount Raised]] to date!</span></strong></p> Campus Recreation Club Sports are student-run and funded sports teams. Most teams participate in established leagues and compete against other colleges and universities, however, clubs can also be instructional or recreational in nature. Most teams practice a few times per week and compete on the weekend. This gives students an opportunity to participate in a sport they love (or one they are brand new to) and also have time to participate in other areas of student life. All recognized clubs are supervised by the Department of Campus Recreation. In order to operate their teams, club sports student athletes must create yearly budgets, pay dues, and plan and execute fundraisers. Each year, clubs assume thousands of dollars in costs for league dues, game officials, uniforms, equipment, apparel, travel, and much more! Like many others, the COVID-19 pandemic has also negatively impacted our club sports teams. However, with plans for a fully operational 2021-2022 Academic Year, we are asking for your assistance to help return our club teams to action!

Many of us have things we no longer want to wear, never liked but bought anyway, still have the tags on because we were going to “get down to that size again,” or just want someone else to enjoy. Now our students can help you out! The funds you contributed will help pay for dry cleaning and the “extras” like dress socks, necessary undergarments and belts. Our students will be able to represent themselves and Montclair State in fine fashion, while they also share their readiness for the working world. For those who won’t be working remotely forever (or just need to need to look good from the waist up on a Zoom call!), Rocky’s Closet will be a boost to achieving their goals. The EOF Program provides quality academic support, leadership development, financial literacy, career enrichment, intentional counseling/advisement, and need based financial assistance to maximize the intellectual and social growth of all participants. The EOF community fully engages scholars in curricular and co-curricular experiences ultimately producing active alumni dedicated to lifelong learning and global citizenship. EOF Alumni help provide a critical support network for current students by speaking with students, serving as mentors, and demonstrating the path to success beyond Montclair State. In the past 50+, years, EOF has been established on over 55 campuses in the state of New Jersey and sets the pace for many initiatives which today are widely incorporated into college life. Among the many powerful strategies implemented by EOF are pre-college articulation, basic skills testing and remediation, systematic retention efforts, peer counseling and peer tutoring, academic support courses, multicultural curricula and human relations programming, student leadership development, and outcomes-based program evaluation.   The Educational Opportunity Fund is a statewide program represented at most colleges and universities in New Jersey. Montclair State University's EOF Program currently services approximately 700 scholars. <strong>The EOF book fund provides scholarships for highly motivated low income scholars to purchase/rent books for their courses. </strong>The average cost of books per semester can range from $200-$600 and continues to rise. Today, the EOF program at Montclair State serves low-income, highly motivated first-generation students who have demonstrated commitment, motivation, and potential for success in every county of the state.

Help make sure we can support journalism in New Jersey and collaboration around the world for the next 10 years.</strong> Your gift will directly support the operations of the Center, enabling us to share vital information, research, resources and products to help sustain the future of local news and information.   <em><strong>What we do:</strong></em><strong> </strong>   The mission of the Center for Cooperative Media is to grow and strengthen local journalism and support an informed society in New Jersey and beyond. The Center was founded in 2012 in response to the downsizing of New Jersey news organizations and the changes in the ownership of regional public media. These shifts in the news and information landscape hurt the volume of local news available in a state that has historically had limited news coverage, due to its proximity to the major metropolitan areas of New York City and Philadelphia. With 564 municipalities packed into a densely populated state, New Jersey was—and is—ripe for innovation in local journalism. The Center coordinates statewide and regional reporting, connecting more than 300 local news and information providers through its flagship project, the NJ News Commons. The Commons helps partners to share content and encourages them to collaborate and to support one another. The Center also conducts and publishes research on emerging ideas and best practices, focusing on local journalism, business models, and ecosystem mapping.  The Center studies and advocates for collaborative journalism, including hosting an annual national summit for journalism organizations to foster the conditions, ideas, and practices that lead to stronger journalism across the U.S.   <strong><em>Our work also includes:</em></strong> <ul><li>Coordinating statewide and regional reporting projects, such as Stories of Atlantic City, Voting Block, the Diverse Source Database and Loved and Lost. </li><li>Offering awards and stipends to support collaborative projects and peer-to-peer learning through programs like the South Jersey Information Equity Project, Stories Invincible and previously the Peer Learning + Collaboration Fund.</li><li>Supporting community, ethnic and immigrant media through programs such as NJ Media Counts and COVID-19 fellowships.</li><li>Hosting monthly press briefings with newsmakers. </li><li>Providing emotional and professional support to local journalists across the state. </li><li>Publishing a daily newsletter amplifying the day’s top news stories as reported by our New Jersey news partners. </li><li>Writing about what’s happening in our news ecosystem and across the industry through a twice-monthly global collaborative journalism newsletter and biweekly Newsroom Digest about the media ecosystem in New Jersey. </li><li>Researching issues related to New Jersey’s local news and information ecosystem and collaborative journalism.</li><li>Hosting the world’s only conference dedicated entirely to studying collaborative journalism. Holli was a professional jazz musician, vocalist and lyricist, music educator at MSU. <p><span>[[Amount Raised]]</span> from <span>[[Gifts Received]]</span> gifts</p> The Holli Ross Fund for Jazz Studies has been established to promote professionalism in jazz studies and is inspired by Holli Ross’ unwavering dedication to the next generation of jazz artists. Holli Ross was the consummate student with a vision and found ways to learn what was required to bring that vision to fruition - even if in nontraditional ways. When Holli was earning her Bachelor’s degree in bassoon performance from The Mannes College of Music, the field of jazz vocal studies did not formally exist. Following her interests, she asked if she could join an instrumental jazz class run by pianist Jack Reilly. He agreed and warned her that he’d treat her like any other instrumentalist. Later, she was tutored by saxophonist Warne Marsh, who also pushed her beyond the usual vocal requirements.  For thirteen years, Holli brought that same rigor and heart to her work as a faculty member of Montclair State University's John J. Cali School of Music, and it is a befitting channel through which her legacy will inspire the making of jazz by generations to come. Holli taught applied jazz voice and directed the jazz vocal ensemble, Vocamotion. Words from the late Holli Ross:  “To be a singer is a special gift, because the voice reaches out to the most primal musical instincts in people. I don’t just get to sing the beautiful melody, I get to tell the beautiful story…or sometimes, a story that ain’t so pretty.
