In Loving Memory - David Chinonyerem Amutah
October 30, 1991 – January 9, 2023
Master David Chinonyerem Amutah was born on October 30, 1991, to Mrs. Abigail and Mr. Solomon Amutah in Trenton, New Jersey, and was granted his angel wings on January 9, 2023.
He was the youngest of Mrs. Abigail Amutah’s four children. He was baptized and raised as a Christian at the First Baptist Church of Trenton, where he was active in the church's Baptist Youth Fellowship group and Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (T.A.S.K). David attended Trenton Public Schools through 8th grade, when he received admission to and a full scholarship for the prestigious Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
While boarding at the Lawrenceville School, David studied Latin, served as president of the filmmaking club, and participated in intramural football. After graduating from high school, David studied film production at Hofstra University and Mercer County Community College before completing his studies in filmmaking at Montclair State University by obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree. Following his graduation David remained connected to Montclair through his mentorship of undergraduates including an impending guest lecture in late January 2023, further showcasing his love for his Red Hawk family.
David subsequently worked as a Motion Graphic Designer for IMGN Media at Warner Music Group up until his untimely passing. He directed his own films including The Song Is Over (2015) and Corndog (2019). He lent his creative talent to various other film productions and contributed to the completion of over 12 short films. He also completed an internship with one of his idols–legendary filmmaker John Sayles–and was an avid lover of music, food, his family, and various sports teams including the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, and Chelsea FC.
David will always be remembered for his infectious smile, obedience, humility, broad intelligence, kind heart, and generous spirit. Those who were fortunate enough to know him can testify that the quality of his existence far exceeded the quantity of time in which he blessed this Earth.
The David Amutah Legacy Scholarship is intended to support the education and/or professional pursuits of an aspiring filmmaker at Montclair State University. Candidates from historically marginalized backgrounds will be given first preference. With the award, the Amutah family hopes to help current undergraduates purchase textbooks, secure equipment, enter film festivals, and more as David did.
